Kim Kardashian is no stranger to putting all her TMI moments out in the public limelight, but these sultry shots haven’t been revealed till now.
A few months after Kim’s raunchy sex tape was released in 2007, the now widely known billionaire was apparently a pro at peeling off her clothes in front of the camera, so much so that she stripped down to her birthday suit during a Playboy cover shoot that wasn’t supposed to be nude.
The outtakes from photographer Stephen Wayda’s shoot that fall, show the reality star striking sultry poses before eventually leaving less to the imagination.
“There was to be no nudity and we wound up doing full nudity,” Wayda recalled. “For somebody that had never modeled before, she really did a good job of taking a difficult unprepared situation and making it into something.”
The Playboy photoshoot became a hot topic in the fourth episode of her reality show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”.
“Her mom wanted her to do Playboy to promote the show,” the 76-year-old photographer said. “At that point, the only thing she had been known for was the sex tape.”
Kris Jenner’s reaction to her daughter’s work, “You’re doing amazing, sweetie”, went viral and became its own meme. Jenner even filed to have the catchphrase trademarked.
When they arrived at Playboy Studio West in Santa Monica, Wayda, Kim and Kris thought they were there to take just her cover photo.
However, the art director explained that they had to reshoot her entire pictorial, since the original, done by another photographer, didn’t meet Hef’s standards for Playboy.
Wayda, who shot over 35 Playboy covers, was taken aback by the criticism of his work not being enough.
“I go, ‘Well how do I do that? I have no wardrobe, no set, no preparation and the mom is here,’” he recalled.
Wayda ended up utilizing a set of black bed sheets, a fluffy white jacket, and strings of fake pearls. Kardashian didn’t bring anything with her, since the shoot was supposed to be shot quickly. The stylists on set had provided some undergarments.
“She first had a pair of black underwear on, but they were too big,” Wayda said. “So we swapped them out for a barely-there black thong. The props and accessories were meant to cover up the nudity. But nudity developed within just 40 minutes of the shoot’s start.”
“As she was moving, I’d take pictures. The pearls would open up as she would move. She became comfortable with it,” Wayda said. “Kardashian was a a sweetheart and very gracious and Jenner, who I felt was very controlling, greenlit it all.”
