A date has finally been set for FKA Twigs’ trial against ex-boyfriend Shia LaBeouf nearly a year and a half after she sued him over their allegedly abusive relationship.
The trial will begin in Los Angeles on April 17, 2023, a court official confirmed on Monday.
“The gaslighting has gone on long enough here and it’s time to hold Shia LaBeouf accountable,” Twigs’ lawyer, Bryan Freedman, told the website. “My client wants a trial date.”
The “Cellophane” singer, 34, sued LaBeouf, 35, for sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress in December 2020.
“I’d like to be able to raise awareness on the tactics that abusers use to control you and take away your agency,” Twigs told the New York Times at the time.
Twigs has accused the “Transformers” actor of choking her, threatening to crash the car they were both in and knowingly giving her a sexually transmitted disease. But LaBeouf has denied her claims.
He had told the Times in an email, “I’m not in any position to tell anyone how my behavior made them feel. I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalizations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I’m ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say.”
And in a separate email to the newspaper, he stated that “many of these allegations are not true,” but owed the women “the opportunity to air their statements publicly and accept accountability for those things I have done.”
LaBeouf, who has a long history of arrests and trouble with the law, also said that he was “not cured of his PTSD and alcoholism.”
“But I am committed to doing what I need to do to recover, and I will forever be sorry to the people that I may have harmed along the way,” he had said.
Twigs has said that she plans on donating a portion of ant winnings she receives to domestic violence causes.
“What I went through with Shia was the worst thing I’ve ever been through in the whole of my life,” she said. “I don’t think people would ever think that it would happen to me. But I think that’s the thing. It can happen to anybody.”
Twigs and LaBeouf dated for a little less than a year after meeting on set on the set of “Honey Boy” in 2018.
She was previously engaged to Robert Pattinson, splitting in 2017 after three years together, and is currently dating The 1975’s Matt Healy.
Meanwhile, LaBeouf, who has a tumultuous dating history, welcomed a baby last month with on-again, off-again girlfriend Mia Goth. The pair, who were married, but split in 2018 seemingly rekindled their relationship.
LaBeouf was also dating Margaret Qualley but they split after Twigs’ allegations came to light in May 2021. The “Maid” actress has since shown her support for Twigs.
