Gloria Estefan is happy she didn’t end up performing alongside Jennifer Lopez and Shakira for the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show.
During her appearance on Wednesday’s “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” the Cuban singer confirmed she refused the offer to join the ladies on the world’s biggest stage and addressed Lopez’s comments about having to share the honor with another icon.
“Look, this is the bottom line. You have very little time, like 12 minutes or something, to get things on and off the set,” Estefan, 64, explained.
“So, could you do it with one person? Yes, but I think they wanted to throw a Miami and Latin extravaganza and they tried to pack it as much as possible.”
Throwing some subtle shade at Lopez, Estefan said, “OK, and imagine what J.Lo would have said if I was the third performer!” She went on to say, “I literally would come out, done ‘Shake Your Body’, ‘Conga’, and out. It was their moment. Plus, I didn’t want to go on a diet in December.”
Estefan was reacting to the comments Lopez, 52, made in her new “Halftime” documentary, which opened the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this month.
Lopez argued that the NFL should have picked just one of them to headline the show inside Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, not both.
“This is the worst idea in the world to have two people do the Super Bowl,” a frustrated Lopez said of having to cut her set short in order to split time with Shakira, 45.
“This is something I have been working for and hoping for for years.”
Lopez’s longtime manager, Benny Medina, echoed those sentiments, saying in the doc, “It was an insult to think that you needed two Latinas to do the job that one artist historically has done.”
Estefan is one of the few singers who have had the honor of performing during Super Bowl halftime more than once.
In 1992, she performed during the “Winter Magic” halftime show, which featured nearly 2,000 performers. She also took the stage in 1999 for “A Celebration of Soul, Salsa and Swing” alongside Stevie Wonder, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Savion Glover.
For her part, Shakira, who is currently going through her own personal drama after separating from husband Gerard Piqué, has yet to address Lopez’s latest comments.
